Frequently Asked Questions
Here at Cornerstone Family Chiropractic, we often get questions from our clients trying to learn more about Chiropractic Care and how they can find a Chiropractor in Winnipeg who can help them.
Below are some of the most common questions we get asked by new patients.
Moreover, if you have any question that isn’t addressed below, we invite you to call the office at 204-777-5433.
When you do, one of our team members will be happy to answer any question or address any concern you may have.
What is an adjustment?
A chiropractor can use their hands or one of many tools to adjust your spine.
An adjustment can help correct any misalignments causing pain in the area being treated and any other issues this misalignment may be causing.
There are various methods to perform an adjustment, including manual adjustments, instruments or the force of gravity.
Are chiropractic adjustments safe?
Yes, chiropractic adjustments are not only surprisingly safe but are a natural alternative to avoid drugs and risky surgery.
Moreover, chiropractic adjustments can help people avoid reliance on pain medication.
Your chiropractor will assess your health and specific situation and determine the best course of action for your unique needs.
Are all patients adjusted the same way?
No. Each individual patient’s spine and situation is unique.
Therefore we customize a plan for each individual patient.
The plan is based on the patient’s age, condition and health.
This is while also taking into consideration the patient’s health history, x-rays, and spine assessment.
Can't I adjust myself?
No. Unfortunately, there is a common misconception that you can adjust yourself.
This belief is held because people can often easily make their joints pop.
Furthermore, you can damage your bones and joints by over-mobilizing a joint that already has too much mobility resulting from weakened muscles and ligaments.
Conversely, adjustments are focused and targeted movements that take years of training to master.
Will chiropractic adjustments make my spine too loose?
No. A chiropractor will focus on the spinal joints that are locked up or restricted, and these are the areas the chiropractor will perform the chiropractic adjustments to.
Moreover, an adjustment can also assist in relaxing and healing the associated muscles and ligaments.
What makes the sound during the adjustment?
The correct term for the “cracking” sound is cavitation.
This sound results from the fluid capsule surrounding the joint building up pressure, causing bubbles within the joint to suddenly collapse and/or form.
How long will I need chiropractic care?
The length of time a patient will need is entirely dependent on their specific situation and spine health.
Following your initial new patient chiropractic examination, the chiropractor will recommend a care plan based on determinations found during the initial assessment.
However, after our patients get the relief they need, many continue with regular care.
These ongoing visits support long-term spine health and act as a preventative measure to help detect and resolve any new spine and health issues before they become serious.
Can I have chiropractic care after back surgery?
Yes, you absolutely can be adjusted following back surgery.
However, your chiropractor will most definitely complete a full assessment and avoid any surgically modified areas of your spine.
It’s important to note; spinal surgery can create instability both above and below the area where surgery was performed.
It’s these areas that your chiropractor will focus on.
Can patients with osteoporosis get chiropractic care?
Yes, of course. During your initial new patient appointment, your chiropractor will complete a full assessment and develop a plan based on your specific needs.
There are many methods and techniques to adjust the spine, and your doctor will select the suitable method and technique based on your health, age, size, condition and a host of other factors.
Is Chiropractic Treatment Appropriate for Children?
Absolutely! Children can experience exceptional benefits from Chiropractic Care.
Something important to keep in mind is Children are typically very physically active, and as a result, experience a wide variety of bumps, falls and blows from sports and their daily physical activities.
These “traumas” can lead to symptoms like back and neck pain, soreness, stiffness, and general discomfort.
Therefore, gentle chiropractic care adapted for children by a highly trained professional can help maintain the integrity of the spine and the body’s structure and overall health.
What types of conditions do you treat?
Chiropractic care can treat a variety of ailments and symptoms.
These include but are not limited to back pain, neck pain, headaches, migraines, leg and arm pain, numbness and tingling, muscle pain and weakness, shoulder, wrist and elbow problems, sports injuries, as well as hip, foot, and knee problems.
Chiropractic care can assist with almost all musculoskeletal issues. You can find a more complete list of the various symptoms chiropractic care can help with on our core chiropractic page.
